How and why design exists? What is the essence of design and how we agree with its existence? Can Functions of design embody the essence of design? All of these are questions we should keep pursuing. To solve the question of existence means to solve ontology. The activity of mankind to make tools has been directly reflected the spiritual homelessness of mankind. It would be a profound influence on tool-making activity of mankind, if the question of design existence can be well settled.The article investigates the Chinese meaning and originality of "utensil"and" appliance" and finds out that it is a common rule of incorporation of "utensil "and" appliance" and the consideration of its function during design a "utensil". It further points out that the premises of integration of "utensil" and "appliance" is to paying attention to the body of human being, to seek after the originality of design and to explore the methodology of design.The importance of function during design is emphasized by virtue of the discussion of somaesthetics. As the game locality of "desire, skill and witness", the body is both the " executive" and "receiver" as well:As "executive", it fulfills the functions of utensil being made by technique; while as "receiver", it content with its desire through the function of the utensil. All these are implanted in the law of "design". The significance of key function is demonstrated during the pursuit of law of design. By taking advantage of philosophy of both "Heidegger "and "Chuang Tzu" during the discussion, the role of function of design behind the correlation of "the law of design" and "utensil" is expressed. The author also analyzed the thoughts of design of Mo ZI, Li Yu, Sollivan, and Corbusier to support the demonstration. In the meantime the article proposed some principal requirements for the existence of design by the way of function of design. These requirements are supported by designs such as porcelain of Song dynasty, arch-shape in architecture, layout of city, Vi design and stripes of costume.There are 5 chapters in the article. The first chapter briefly discussed the main content and realistic significance of design existence and its function study. The second chapter delves the function of design by citing a few phases and words in order to refer the function of design to "man" and "Tao" the necessity of design function for human being by the discussing of design and the body and the existence of design is debated in chapter four. It is elucidated in the third chapter that design function is indispensable to "man" by discussing design and body. Finally, the chapter five focuses on the internal requirements: standardization and orderliness. During the process of writing, we have focused on meticulousness, logic, persuasiveness, arrangement, consistency and the affiliation of theory and fact.
