A Study On "Xing-Xiang" In Chinese Ancient Poetics

"Xing-xiang"is a cross-cutting and integration category of the"Xing"and the"Xiang(images)", which are important categories of Chinese ancient aesthetic and poetics. The"Xing"runs through the various stages of the development of Chinese poetry and involves a numerous links of poetry creating. In these different levels, it has different meanings and names like"Bi-xing""Gan-xing""Xing-yu""Xing-ji""Yi-xing""Xing-tuo""Xing-xiang"and"Xing-hui". We read out, the meaning's evolution of"Xing"has experienced three stages. The first stage is primitive era, the second is Confucian classics and the third is poetics. In the first stage, the numerous understanding and usage are derived from the literal sense of"Qi". During this period,"Xing"as a symbolic dance gradually transforms from the very strong religious significance lives of activities to the arts, and the complex religious concepts converts to the normal standardized poetry skills.In the second stage, as the Confucian classics in Han dynasty,"Xing"produced the meaning of"Xing-yu". In the third stage, as the impact of the esthetic practice in Wei-Jin dynasty,"Xing"produced the meaning of"Xing-gan"."Xiang (images)"which was originally a philosophy category in period of Pre-qin dynasty , was introduced in aesthetic and poetics areas and formed an aesthetic image theory. During this period,"Xing"and"Xiang (images)"have a cross-integration of its theoretical point, both of them related to the stimulation of poet's creative, the expression of poet's aesthetic feelings and the forming of poets aesthetic images, and some other aspects.The"He-yue-ying-ling-ji"of Yin-fan in Tang dynasty first put forward the word"Xing-xiang''. If aesthetic images emerging from poet's"Gan-xing"can affect readers to create a new aesthetic images in his mind, the aesthetic images is"Xing-xiang". We can see from the three aspects of the"Xing-xiang". 1, Yinfan summed up the poetry theory and practice in Wei-Jin and Tang dynasty , pursuit of poetry characteristics both to"Xing-xiang"and also to"Feng-gu"and"Sheng-lu". 2, Yinfan bring up three different ways of aesthetic"Gan-xing", and formulated their different intrinsic mechanism. 3, Yinfan expressed great importance of poetry works which was beyond the way of"Chang-yan""Chang-jing""Chang-yan"and have the characteristics of"Zhi-yuan""Xing-pi""Yi-biao""qing-you""Xing-yuan""Fang-wai-zhi-yan""Chang-qing-zhi-wai""Fang-wai-zhi-qing""Qu-yuan-qing-shen""Qing-xing-beil-iang""Xing-xing""Qi""Yi""Yuan".The essence of his theory emphasize on the beauty of"Xiang-wai", and the later poetry theory of"Yi-jing"is dirive from this. The category of"Xing-xiang"has new development and deepening in poetics of Ming and Qing dynasty. The poetics of Ming and Qing dynasty respect the poem of Tang dynasty and belittle Song dynasty, hence"Xing-xiang"category was inherited consciously. When it was considered as the summary of the poetics of Tang dynasty. In this period, the use of words-"Xing-xiang"-performance in three aspects.1, the summary of poem style in the Tang dynasty.2, a image.3, as a aesthetic realm. In Ming and Qing dynasty, the poet and scholars first been understood as a aesthetic image that can"Xing", and then gradually deduced the proposition"Xing-zai-xiang-wai"which greatly enhanced the aesthetic level of"Xing-xiang".The structure characterized of"Xing-xiang"is object before poet's heart and poem's feeling dirive from object.
