This thesis, by tracing the history of the Progressive Era, analyzes the advancement and characteristics of the election in 1912, attempts to explore the influence of this election on American's politics, economy as well as diplomacy.The thesis begins with an introduction which illustrates the special era for the election and explores the different political strategies of different parties.Chapter One looks back on the history of the Progressive Era, introduces and explores the characteristics of the U.S. presidential election in 1896, and at the same time compares and analyzes the New Nationalism and the New Freedom, It also points out the significance of the Socialist Party which was headed by E. V. Debs.Chapter Two demonstrates the advancement and characteristics of American 1912 election, by tracing the breaking up of the Republican Party and the reasons how Wilson became the Democratic Party's candidate, analyzes the characteristics of the political system in American. This chapter also compares and analyzes the different political views in the election and finally further discusses the distribution of the presidential vote of 1912, which indicates the special places of this election.Chapter Three analyzes various factors which affects the election in 1912. It shows the political conditions for the black and points out that the political differences of different parties caused the black to throw the most ballots for the Democratic Party. This chapter also emphasizes the significance of the third party in U.S. history.Chapter Four explores the influence of the election in 1912, including the fields of politics, economy and diplomacy. By comparing this election with that in 1896, it also explores the critical links between the U.S. political atmosphere and the election in 1912, and the results of the vote influences on the American political system.Epilogue summarizes the characteristics of the election in 1912, and further emphasizes the significance of this thesis.
