As an information carrier in civilization of human society, image has become one of the major language symbols in cultural development. In modern visual communication, image, as an information carrier, has been more outstanding than at any other times.Firstly, this paper starts from the concept of image art. There are many paraphrases for the word"image". In Chinese history, image refers to a combination of graph and the meaning of graph, which is a superorganic cultural concept. While in western history, the words"icon","picture"and"image"indicate that the visualized cognition of image is a psychological process from the surface to the inner. In addition, from the perspective of image logic, the development of image is the development process of visual communication. Image is closely linked with the development of human civilization: in ancient civilization, agricultural civilization, industrial civilization as well as the modern society dominated by digital information technology, image has played the different roles of information carrier, artistic communication, and so on. Therefore, the basic concept of image is visual information transcending ordinary format difference, that is, the visual connotation indicated by all the visible arts, such as drawing, photography and movies and TV programs with attention paid to the complete cultural information conveyed by the art itself.Secondly, cultural environment differs in different times, and as a cultural symbol, its development correlates with the corresponding era background. According to the functions, the image art can be classified simply into information recordation function and artistic configuration function. Naturally, with the development in different era, the function focus of image artistic changes as well. This paper makes a comparison among image artistic function in different eras. The cultural development goes hand in hand with technological development, namely, the fast-paced development of science and technology at this time of ours.
