Based on British linguist M.A.K. Halliday's thematic theory and Czech linguist Danes'theory on patterns of thematic progression, this thesis aims to disclose text organization patterns and text cohesive devices and how important genre and language in deciding the formation of thematic structure. The English sample texts are selected from The New York Times and China daily, published from January thru April in 2007. For their near counterparts, the Chinese papers from 21st Economic Reports(21世纪经济报道),Reference News(参考消息)and International Tribune Herald (国际先驱导报)( from November 2006 thru April 2007).The similarities and dissimilarities in constituents as themes, the typical roles of theme, and patterns of thematic progression will be analyzed. Besides, E-C translation strategies of business news are also stated.Through careful comparative analysis of the thematic structure in the two language sample texts, it can be concluded that both languages share a lot in common since they belong to the same genre, meanwhile possessing some features different from one another since they are distinct languages. Anyway, the thematic structure will tell us more if more exploration in rheme is done.
