To depict the character's image and trait is one of the key techniques in creation of a novel. The author always presents the character's individual speech to reflect his/her image and character. It is no denying the fact that translation is basically the switch between two languages. It is a key problem for the target language readers to understand the character's image by reading his/her speech. Wang Xi-feng, one of the most outstanding characters in the famous Chinese classical fiction Hong Lou Meng(The Story of the Stone), is known for her capability of dealing with different people. A lot of scholars have studied Wang Xi-feng from various aspects. The theoretical basis for this paper is one of the three metafunctions of Systemic Functional Linguistics—Interpersonal Function propounded by M.A.K.Halliday. The paper tries to make a tentative study on the translation of Wang Xi-feng's speech in Hong Lou Meng by analyzing Hawkes'version.Functional grammar lays stress on social study of languages. Interpersonal function refers to the interactive relationship between the speaker and his/her listener in a certain context, and reflects the speaker's social status, identity, personality and attitude on things in the world. The Interpersonal component which is used to express the interpersonal meaning mainly includes the mood, modality and evaluation, etc. Based on this framework, the paper makes a study on Wang Xi-feng's speech, namely, the translated version should keep the interpersonal meaning that is reflected in the original as fully as possible. Halliday divides context into field, tenor and mode, in which tenor closely relates to interpersonal function.By analyzing Wang Xi-feng's speech in Hawkes'version on the basis of interpersonal function, this thesis has demonstrated that: to reappear a vivid image of Wang Xi-feng, the translated version reflects Wang's social status, identity, personality, particular time and occasion which properly correspond to the original.
