In Metaphors We Live By, George Lakoff and Mark Johnson claim that metaphor is pervasive in everyday life, not just in language but in thought and action. The essence of metaphor is understanding and experiencing one kind of thing in terms of another. Experientially unformed concepts have been formed into linguistic formats via metaphor. Therefore, our ordinary conceptual system, in terms of which we both think and act, is fundamentally metaphorical in nature. The reason why writers talk about metaphors is to reject the myth of objectivism in western culture. So they offer an alternative account of human experience and understanding, that is, an experientialist account. The purpose of the thesis is trying to provide a reading guide on Metaphors We Live By on the basis of a brief review of western traditional metaphor theories and fully deliver the ideas of the book so as to bring wider attention to metaphors.
