| It seems to most people that Westernization Movement was a self-improvement movement initiated by squirearchy, whose aim was to safeguard feudalization. The Westernization Movement was a halfway movement, which only paid attention to bring in advanced technology for army, not realized the true cause of backwardness. In the introductionary activity the advocates of Westernization Movement only brought in outdated technology for army. They only cared for the function of military equipment, not thought a lot of basic principle of morden science and technology, so this movement could not promote the development of society effectively.However there were a lot of defects in the process of western technology introduction, but we had to note that the advocates of Westernization Movement not only bring in advanced technology, but also carried on the technological innovation in the specific field. All the introductionary activities influenced society especially education deeply, which strengthened people's understanding of western science and technology.This article tries to point out the initiative contributions and historical effects of the introductionary activity initiated by advocates of Westernization Movement, and to open out the development trend of Westernization Movement from introductionary and innovation angles. This article is divided into three parts as follow.Part one, summarizing the origins of Westernization Movement and it's each stage of development from two aspects.Part two, describing the various characteristic of each stage in the introductionary activity of science and technology in detail.Part there,probing into the general feature of introductionary activity of science and technology, in order to offer reference for today's things.Through the expansion of these three parts mentioned above, this paper attemptes to solve following questions.First, the movement of introducing the science and technology can be divided into three historical stages, they are beginning stage, all-rouned way stage and finishing stage.Second, there are innovations in the introducing activiting. The introducing activities themselves are innovation because it's the first time for China to introduce the western science and technology, the means of introducing and the science and technology itself are both new things.Third, the introducing activities influce the modern education of science and technology. In course of introducing of modern science and technology, the most difficult problem that leaders of Westernization Movement meets at first is the deficient of modern skilled people, so all kinds of new-type schoole have been estatblished, which have not only trained large quantities of modern skilled workers for China during Westernization Movement, but also supplied the intellectual support for development of the introduction activity of modern science and technology. More important,the setting up of the new-type schools plays an enormous role too in opening local trait, removing the feudal thought, in addition,these schools have offered the preparation an the thought for spread and development of China's modern science and technology.Fourth, the relationship between the views of science and technology and the introduction of science and technology. The dominate views of the leaders of Westernization Movement is that Chinese learning is as the fundamental structure, and western learning is for practical use according to this views, they have only introduced the useful maturite technologies, thus they have ignored the indtroducion of the latest science and technoloyg.Fifth, the enlightenment of the introduction of science and technology to nowdays'develoment of science and technology. Bing the governance strance stratum of the old feudal society, the introduction of science and technology must have had a great deal of historical limitation role, and draw experiences or lessous for our national development, social progress, and nowdays'development of our scicence and technology.
