Globalization has made English language teaching become a significant part in education nowadays. Besides the plentiful studies of students, English teacher has been a focus in the research. Among the rest, the study of teacher characteristics is a main research subject, because teacher characteristics can affect students' learning interest, students' achievements, even the improvement of the whole career of EFL teaching.In China, little research is done on college beginning English teachers, so the present study focuses on the characteristics of beginning teachers by discussing the relationship between teacher characteristics and their classroom teaching, so as to provide basis for beginning teachers' training, as well as their self-development.The study deals with five cases related to five beginning teachers from three universities. The data come from classroom observation, semi-structured interviews, and questionnaires, subsequently are analyzed by means of the constant comparative method. It has been found that beginning teachers were quite serious to teaching responsibility, but they had difficulties in managing the class, and were not experienced enough to conduct activities in class. What was more, it was found that they did not have enough time and conditions to get further professional development.This study concludes that beginning teachers should apply more teaching approaches, and conduct as many activities as possible. It is suggested that to gain higher professional qualities, beginning teachers should get further education and gain professional development. Besides, the concerned administration should provide abundant, effective and beneficial condition for beginning teachers' professional development, and also improve both the teaching environment and teaching facilities.
