As a type of traditional folk art, Huishan clay figurine comes from among the people and is very popular as well. It is of a great variety, and it has its own special artistic style. The folk artists, through long-time practice, have with the Huishan clay as the material, found out experiences in making clay figurines.Kunqu Opera is the most ancient opera style that is existing, and it originated from Kunshan, Jiangsu Province, and was originally named Kunshan Qiang. Improved by Wei liangfu and Liang chenyu and some other people, Kunqu Opera has become a comprehensive art with the combination of literature, drama, performing, music, stage, and fine arts. It is rich in poetic and artistic conception.Kunqu Opera has become popular all around China since Ming and Qing dynasty. In Wuxi, various kinds of folk activities contributed to the prosperity of Kunqu Opera, and it enjoys popularity from people of all walks of life. As the result, the clay artists , being offered the chances of viewing and emulating the opera, found the brandnew field of creation:"making the opera understood through the clay figurines". The artists presented the contents of the opera in a vivid way with the help of performing techniques, clay sculpture, and representative plots and movements of the characters.This paper aims at discussing the creation and appreciation of the clay sculpture from the perspective of sociology with the help of the social ecological environment of the two folk arts. It involves the living environment and experiences of the artists, the ways of making clay sculpture, and the associations between the two artistic languages. The conclusion is about the characteristics of the appreciation of the beauty in both art forms.
