Human relations (HR) form in the communications of human beings and influence human beings' work and life. The types of human relations differ according to the different roles people play in the society. Teacher-Student relationship can be termed as human relations in language classroom. Teachers convey their teaching content, knowledge, information, facts as well as feelings and attitudes by communicating with students through verbal and nonverbal communication ways. The teacher's roles have great effect on students' classroom attitude and performance. Positive relationships help to cultivate a harmonious classroom climate and facilitate students' language learning, but negative relationships might be one important contributory factor to learners' study-weary attitude. Unfortunately, scare attention has now been paid to the improvement of human relations in the Chinese college English classrooms.In this thesis the author aims at finding the status quo of human relations especially Teacher-Student relationship in Chinese college English classroom, and justifying that the improvement of human relations in a classroom also improves the quality of academic work and students' psychological status in human relation terms as well as proposing some constructive suggestions for language teachers to practice and develop human relations in the process of their classroom teaching.The thesis begins with the review of related theories and researches elaborating on the important aspects of human relations from sociological and psychological point of view. The research, conducted among five universities in Nanjing, adopted two research methods: case study and survey study. In the case study, five college teachers' English classes were recorded by digital video recorder and then the recording was transcribed. In the survey study, the author designed a questionnaire, in which 178 students took part in the research. Finally, 173 copies of questionnaire were collected. The results indicated that (1) neither the college English teachers nor the English class enjoyed high popularities; (2) English teachers played the role as instructor and controller more than counselor and facilitator in classroom; (3) teachers' verbal and nonverbal communication ways were not satisfactory and; (4) English teachers and classmates had influence on students' language learning.The study suggests that (1) improving human relations in college English class can help to improve language teaching and learning;(2) the practice and development of human relations in college need improving; (3) teachers should improve their awareness of the importance of human relations, paying special attention to use various interactive skills in classroom.
