| College English teaching is an important part of higher education, and college English is, of course, a course that college students must learn. According to the College English Curriculum Requirements (for Trial Implementation) published in 2004, the objective of College English is to develop students'ability of using English in an all around way, so that in the social interactions in future they will be able to exchange information effectively through both spoken and written ways, and at the same time they will be able to enhance their ability to study independently and improve their cultural quality so as to meet the needs of China's social development and international exchanges. English writing is an essential and integral part of English learning and is a required skill for the non-English majors in college and university. However, English writing is a complicated skill for most Chinese college students to grasp. Many teachers and experts (Pan Jun, 1998;Liu Hailiang, 1999;Cai Jigang, 2002; Yang Huizhong, 2004) consider that the teaching of college English writing in China is unsatisfactory and problematic; the writing competence of college students can't meet the requirements of the college English syllabus and the needs of the society.The teaching of college English in Guangxi has achieved much progress in recent years, but college students'English language competence is still far from satisfactory, and it needs reforming and improving, so as to meet the needs of the social development.On the basis of the former relevant studies on English writing, and in the light of the theories of second language writing, the author did a survey on the current situation of college teaching of English writing in five universities (Guangxi University,Guangxi Teachers Education University,Guangxi Normal University, Guangxi University of Technology and Yulin Normal University) in Guangxi by using the methods of questionnaire, interview and sample collection. The results of the survey indicate that the students'deficiency in English writing is due to personal and instructional reasons: (1) the ineffective teaching; (2) students lack interest in writing, thus they always feel bored in English writing course,;(3) students'poor linguistic competence hinders their writing; (4) the lack of the cultural knowledge of the target language makes students have poor consciousness of English text structure and the way of thinking.According to what the survey has revealed, the opinions given by the students in the interviews and the English writing characteristics, the author ventures to propose some suggested solutions: (1) Boost students'motivation in English writing by integrating reading with writing and providing effective feedback to the students;(2) Make the writing topic close to the students'realistic life so as to stimulate their writing interest and enlarge their way of thinking; (3) Promote the communication between students, and the relationship between students and teachers for the purpose of helping and inspiring each other by the way of providing effective feedback, thus to improve the students'writing ability. |
