There is a long history of metaphor study in Western world. From Plato, Aristotle, Quitinllian, Circero, Doctor Johnson of century, Richards to Lakoff and Halliday of this century, a clear and continuous line of the metaphor study can be drawn. In the western world, especially in the US, 1970s is an exiting era in that the metaphor-studying atmosphere has reached the craziest. The seminars based on the metaphor study are hold one by one. The vision of the metaphor study has been widened. Metaphor has become the focus of philosophy, linguistics and psychology. Currently the focus of the metaphor study is its cognitive function as a thinking mode not the rhetorical function. But there is one point that we should notice that although people realized that metaphor has the function of cognition, most of the examples are cited from the literature works, which mistake people that phenomena of metaphor do not exist in the scientific language which is supposed to reveal the cognitive process and report the newest findings. But it is exiting that the western study of the scientific metaphor has begun and influences our Chinese scientific linguistic study.This paper mainly discusses the metaphor in EST which means English of Science and Technology.
