| This paper is on the American Missionary Calvin Mateer's activities in China which is mainly his founding and managing the hantung College (Wenhuiguan)."To assist mission with education enterprise"——founding and managing Missionary schools was an important activity of the Christan Protestant missionaries in China during Late Qing. Calwin mateer whom this paper deals with is a typical character among the Missionary educationist. This paper is comprised of two parts. The former discusses the background and the cause of Mateer's founding the school, which includes American church's social position and nature, the activities of the American Prebyterian of which Mateer is a member, American education condition, Mateer's experience in America, the education condition in China when Mateer began to found his school, the missionaries'different opions on missionaries'founding schools, Julia's initiative, Mateer's unfruitful itineration; the latter part discusses the process and influence of Mateer's founding and managing the school, which includes the courses that Wenhuiguan offered and its cause, the students'extracurricular activities,the school's (its graduates and the other sides) influence on society.This paper emphsises the American protestant church's progressive social position, Mateer's opion that Christian church and natural science promote each other, and on the basis of this, his attaching great importance on natural science in his church school, Mateer's opposing setting English course, giving classes in English and his argument with others on this issue.In short, this paper thinks that Mateer's activities was beneficial, doesn't agree with his backwardness and harmfulness. While, this paper thinks that Chinese must found their own causes despite the causes founded by foreign in China such as the church schools duing Late Qing period were benfical which could be take advantages. |
