This thesis bases on the West China Missionary News,combing with local chronicles,archives to analyse the missionary activities and the interaction between protestant missionaries and sichuan society in the late Qing and early republic of China.Protestant missionaries entered Sichuan in the 1870 s and 1880 s.Through the continuous management and development,the protestantism welcomed its prosperity.The paper teases out the basic states of the Christianity and protestant missionaries in Sichuan in the late Qing and early republic of China,introducing the variation of the preaching methods and objects.This paper also talks about the difficulties the missionaries had encountered,and researches on the missionaries' response to the social activities and cultural custom of Sichuan citizens.The process of bring Christianity to modern Sichuan is also the course of interaction with Sichuan society.The missionaries hold dominant position seemingly,but in fact the local society not always absorb the western culture passively.Not only did the society respond positively,but it also export the indigenous cultures.Except the gospel and western knowledge,the protestant missionary also introduces social conditions,customs and confucianism philosophy to the foreigners.To some extent,the interaction between protestant missionaries and Sichuan society reflects the Sino-western cultural communication.Regardless of conflict or accommodation,both are the results of intercultural communication.
