O'Neill and Ibsen are important writers in the history of modern drama, and they have made great contributions to the development of drama. Scholars both in China and foreign countries have taken a full and in-depth study about their works. However, there are many research articles related to the relationship between O'Neill and Ibsen, but not much detail. Based on previous research achievements, this thesis hope to show the process of O'Neill's drama form clumsy to maturity by analyzing Ibsen's influence on the early, and middle plays of O'Neill.This thesis consists of five parts. The opening part is an introduction to research status about two great writers. The first chapter analyzes the reason why O'Neill accepted Ibsen's influence. Chapter two discusses the impact of Ibsen to O'Neill's early plays. O'Neill had undergone a transformation from trial to triumph during this stage. Chapter three is the most important part. In this chapter, this thesis research on the relationship between the middle dramas of O'Neill and Ibsen. The purpose of this chapter is to show the creative process that O'Neill how to reach maturity gradually and the inevitability that O'Neill transcend this influence by discussing his several representative works. The conclusion recalls the progress of O'Neill's efforts under the influence of Ibsen. O'Neill couldn't become a great writer without this progress.The thesis is based on the in-depth interpretation of the texts, and its objective wanted to achieve is to show a process clearly.
