Mao Pang was celebrated for his great art in poetry, Ci and essays, in the literary circle of the last years of Song Dynasty. By contrast, his Ci earned him more reputation than his poetry, which can probably explain the reason why studies have been conducted only on his life and Ci. Yet, as a matter of fact, then literary giant Su Shi appreciated Mao Pang's poetry, and even the SiKu quan shu hall officials of Qing Dynasty thought highly of his poetry as well. The present thesis, combined with the backdrop of his time and his experiences, focuses on the examination of Mao Pang's poetry in order to reveal the whole style and features and induce Mao's characters from his works, which consists of 4 chapters.Chapter 1. The thought of Mao Pang's poetry was influenced by Su Shi to a great extent, characterized by 3 features: Longing for Vigor, pursuit of simplicity and plainness, emphasis on the view of the world in a hollow-and-clear-minded state . To some degree, Mao Pang borne much resemblance to Li Bai, ranging from his personality to his works. Mao Pang's poetry displayed his ideal artistic style of pursuit of simplicity and plainness, which was that poets should try to observe the world and sense the nature of the universe in a hollow-and- clear-minded state by keeping a distance from the real life.Chapter 2.The Reflection of Mao Pang's poetry. Mao Pang's poetry centered on the expression of individual feelings——love for nature and ode to nature——Great ambitions that poet had to serve the society couldn't be achieved ,so poet sighed a sullen sigh and even expected to escape from society and live in seclusion like monks. Throughout his life, Mao Pang suffered from the continuous failures of his ambitions, which led to his strong desire for self-relief and self-rescue from nature or the spiritual worlds of Buddhism and Taoism——All that proved to be helpless. As a result, Mao Pang could relieve his feelings by means of the writing of poetry and the drinking of wine. That is why his poetry gave people a feeling of vigor.Chapter 3.The notion of Mao Pang's poetry. Mao Pang's poetry presented the frequent notions of water , wind, flowers, snow, moon, wind and tea, and what not, with the elegant characteristics. Besides, in his works, some notions of animals were worth considering such as tiger, horse and birds, which actually personalized the poet himself with great ambitions unable to be achieved.Chapter 4.The analysis of Mao Pang's poetry styles and its potentially formative cause. Mao Pang's poetry was mostly characterized by "bright beauty" style and "smartness" style. Though various factors led to the shape of both styles, the potentially formative cause was in close connection with the backdrop of his time and his plight. Supposing that the shape of "bright beauty" style was related to going beyond realities , the shape of "smartness "style was related to the relief of his gloom.
