Philip Roth, the most important representative writer of the third generation in Jewish American Literature. His creation represents the important achievement of the American serious literature in recent years to a great extent. In 1990s, Roth published his three great works in succession: American Pastoral, 1997; I Married a Communist, 1998; The Human Stain, 2000. As a system and coherent entirety, the "American Trilogy" includes a great deal of contents with abundant meaning. However, the domestic and international academia still lacks a system, deep comment to study on the trilogy at present.This thesis, through understanding the text of "American Trilogy" conscientiously, meanwhile combined the America's politics, society and culture background, and explained for the basic tool by cultural analysis and text interpretation. Thereby the thesis probed into the motif connotation of the works, and attempt to know better about the thought inclination and culture position of Roth's later period creation. This was also the thesis's conception and creative point. The thesis mainly contained three parts. The first part studied the Jews' special "American dream ", explored the motif of "American dream" in the "American Trilogy", and commented the typical character of this theme: the image of Adam. The second part focused on the modern American family relationship in fission; this family relationship represented as the relation of the father and son, and the conjugal relation; this part also analyzed two kind of special characters in this modern American family relationship in fission. The third part inquired the " Neo-realism " artistic method and motif connotation, mainly observed the application of " Neo-realism " method in Roth's works, and the paper argued that the various artistic method were very important in deepening the motif and strengthening the tragical significance in Roth's novels. This thesis concluded that through deep discussion on the motif connotation of "American Trilogy", both Roth's later works and the development of serious western" Neo-realism" literature could be easily comprehended.
