E.M- Foster (1879-1970), only writes six novels in his life, which very limited compared to his longevity, yet the influence of his novels is everlasting and far-reaching.Some of his novels have been tumed into remarked films against his will; they also provide critics with rich materials to dig and explore, such as symbolism, post-structuralism, psychoanalysis, feminism, etc. Although the criticism has offered enough to help us understand his novels better, it is worth rereading his novels and paying more attention to Foster's dominant theme of connection.Connection is Foster's lifelong pursuits and dream. It refers to a true, complete understanding and loving in human relationship. Due to experience the unconcerned of human relationship from industrial society, Foster seek help to "connection". He wishes that through "connection" in different contexts could be infused warmth, intelligence and soul into the alienated world.In the final analysis, Foster's "connection" express a kind of wish for concordant human relationship. In Foster's opinion, only different class, different race, different nation, different country realized pure-heart communication with each other, our universe could became more glorious.Someone who read Foster's novels could be had experience that "connection" is Foster's novels' theme. If you ignore this theme, you maybe miss the central idea. For this reason, I take the "connection" as a breakthrough point bands together Foster's six novels to intensive study his novels and idea.This thesis consists of 3 parts:The first part: Standpoint of connection's starting. This part analyze the period background, "underdeveloped heart" and cultural identity crisis come to a conclusion that the reasonableness of connection's startingThe second part: Carrier of connection. This part introduces the carrier of Foster's connection. Foster applies tourism, marriage and love to acts as bridge of connection to realize the ideal of different class, different race, different nation, different country's pure-heart communication with each other.The third part: This part discusses the reasons of connection's unsuccess. Though Foster advocated connection energetically, actually his novels still reflect his Culture-hegemonism, England-centered and Europe -centered standpoint.
