As traditional criticisms of John Fowles's first novel, The Collector tend to oversimplify the relationship between Clegg and Miranda as the jailor and the prisoner, this thesis hopes to present a comprehensive study of the relationship between Clegg and Miranda in the light of Foucauldian power theory and the relative narrative theory proposed by Bal and others. The analysis is mainly focused upon the dialogical power relations between the hero and the heroine manifested respectively on the story and narrative planes, in the dualistic position between the subject and object, between power and receiver, and in the double narratives and perspectives. The intended result should be the discovery or construction of a most complicated power relation between Clegg and Miranda as well as their complex and plural identities.
