There is very important meaning about using the light and colors in the development history of the western painting. People are always regarded the light and colors as a focus in enjoying and studying the western painting.This paper elucidated the development and evolvement history that light and colors was used in painting according to the western painting development history clues of using the light and colors and examples including the typical painters and their works in their period. We find that representation of light and colors is different in the different period. At same time the light and colors used had improved the development of the western painting skill and the maturity of the painting thought and ideas.First, this paper summarizes and neatens the inheriting, representation and using for light and colors in the western painting, which the content of painting, colors and sculpt character develops and evolves.Second, in this paper we recite and analyse how the painting masters of the different history stage used light and colors from "Prehistorical art" to "Rome art" imitating light and colors, "Middle ages art" creating "Sanctitude light", "Revival of learning" representing nature light and colors and then light was used to create the drama light, "Impressionistic using the light of science and impairing light instead emphasizing sensibility colors in modern times. Painting lives by the light and colors all along in the painting history.Finally, the light and colors are the medium which painters represent the nature, express subjective feeling and exert imagination and creative ability from the enjoy meaning of the light and colors in the western painting.It is important to dispose the effect in three-dimensional and space and reality and so on in western painting. The light and colors have the function that other plastic elements can't substitute.
