The "May 4th"literary revolution in 1919 marked a new era of poetry in China. Modern Chinese poetry-the poetry that is written in vernacular Chinese and represents the new era,new life, new thoughts and new feelings. The appearance and growth of such poetry are accompanied by the "ideological emancipation",the "poetry revolution" and the storm of anti-imperialist and anti-feudal revolution. The "May 4th"love poetry stands out with its explicit rebellious inclination and thus becomes the highlight of the creation of new poetry during the 1st decade of that era. Young-men and Women at that time aspire for the freedom of love and the liberalization of individuals.Such aspirations became echoing melody in the "May 4th"love poetry, which is like the blazing fire of life. This paper is trying to generalize the genre of the "May 4th"love poetry by analyzing the representative poems. And the spirit of that age will be indirectly touched in the process. The body of the paper falls into two parts. The first part:In the specific age represented by "May 4th",the poets, had discarded the fetters of traditional morality and felt the pulse of the age with a frank and sincere heart. It's safe to say that the poetry created during the first decade bears an obvious mark of that age and has a unique feature that can be called "unconventional emotional and ideological trait".This paper will focus on the following four aspects concerning the poetry:1.Rebel against feudal ethics and pursue freedom2.Practise "head in the sand" and express their love in poetry3.Marry love and philosophy in their works4.Adopt foreign technique and skills in writingThe second part:In order to explore the poets' genre of writing love poems,I will start from analyzing their way of depicting love and the intensity of their emotion. They write about different kinds of love.Accordingly, the poetic form and the way they employed to describe love also vary. The general feature is "diversified way to sing of love".For example, some poets created free and flexible forms according to the emotion to be depicted;some infused the emotion into a certain form which can guide the developing pf the emotion in the poems;and some expressed emotion by using images which the emotion stems from and exceeds. To sum up,the love poetry during the age represented by "May 4th" fully embodies the spirit of that era, both in form and in content. And in the long history of Chinese love poetry,it serves as the link between the past and the future.
