"Image Model"is the most fundamental modeling of traditional Chinese painting. It was formed and developed on the bases of the thinking patterns, the philosophical notions, the cultural achievements and the aesthetic beliefs of Chinese people. It attaches great importance to the blending of people's feelings and the contexts they are in. It also stresses the meaning beyond the contexts and the ambit of achieving harmony between man's inner world and the outside world. The thinking pattern and the view of modeling of"Image"are the sources of the origin and its further development of traditional Chinese painting and its skills. This thesis mainly discusses the background, the form and the history of"Image Model". By comparing it with the"Concrete Model"and"Abstract Model"of western paintings, this thesis intends to make clear the essence of Chinese painting. Using contrast and comparison as its major researching methodology, the present study attempts to offer certain suggestions to the instruction of Chinese painting so as to enhance people's confidence in further developing Chinese painting.
