Amony Chinese painters in the 20th century, a famous painter named Lin Fengmian integrates western art into Chinese one. He integrates skillfully the light and color of western oil paintings into Chinese ink paintings, without losing any Chinese style and its plane division and the splendor of its light and color, which all form an intense visual impulse. Lin Fengmian pursues such valuable compromise exploration of integrating the traditional painting language systems into western factors that he is called"Father of Chinese Modern Art". Many Chinese modern painters follow him and go ahead along his road of China and western integration.Matisse is a world famous French artist and painter, whose paintings are purification performance of picture plane shape and color and his brushwork liberation and his picture harmonious plane effect. His paintings are influenced by painters of western impressionist school and latter impressionist school and Paul Cezanne and so on and are nourished by some eastern arts like Japanese print art, Arabic art, African art and others. His paintings have combined the characteristics of both eastern and western art.Although Lin Fengmian is different from Matisse in the painting kind; the former is primarily good at watercolor paintings and the latter is at oil paintings, their painting language has a purification tendency. In the plastic language, Matisse and Lin Fengmian share the same view that the mind is compatible with the material and they pay more attention to the mind. They focus mainly on expression instead of on reappearance. They lay more emphasis on freehand brushwork rather than on the material description. Matisse'concise and comprehensive painting language, which seems to be relaxed at will, is the result of ripe deliberation. His plastics and lines have a strong tensile force and are full of lively vitality. In addition, Matisse likes to embellish the pictures with decoration grain type, which adds modern sense and eastern charming disposition. Lin Fengmian ponders over his memory image repeatedly and produces many plastic models. His plastic models, specially, female court attendant modeling with Chinese traditional painting characteristics, have the sketch effect, enlightened from brick and stone relief in Han Dynasty and also influenced by western modern arts.In plane structure, Lin Fengmian does well in carrying out western square structure in the square composition, while Matisse integrates eastern artistic empty spirit based on the solid plane space combination ability. We can say that they both seek the harmonious peace of plane space. In the aspect of color language, Matisse's is a decorated color dinner. His bright and pure color, gentle and splendid decoration make the appreciators feel comfort and peace, which is his painting ideal. Lin Fengmian's is a poetic mood of color and ink. His tactful handling the bright color and ink gradation makes his color so characteristic, which is a model for modern Chinese painters to learn and do research on.The first chapter recaps the exploring progress of the two artists, Lin Fengmian and Matisse; the second chapter probes into the characteristics of Lin Fengmian's painting language, i.e., simple ,orderly, forthright and inartificial modeling, color interweaved with ink, and his square structure; the third chapter analyzes the characteristic of Matisse's painting language from the angle of simplified modeling, magnificent and bright color, and new plan order; the fourth chapter is a comparison and analysis of modeling language, color language and plane structure of the two artists.
