The women's dresses of Rococo-style popular in the 18th century were of characteristics and influence in the fashion history in the west. In order to make clear the characteristics and development of these dresses, this thesis deals with the relevant historical figures and events with a comprehensive and multidisciplinary study method concerning the theory of the history of western fashion, western art history, aesthetics and fashion psychology and so on. In stead of the traditional chronological expounding method, it will deal with the women's dresses of Rococo-style against the historical and cultural background. It will also try to reveal the soul of women's dresses of Rococo-style, explain the reasons for their popularity and discover their historical and realistic significance by analyzing people's clothing in the portraits, Genre painting and copper print by Jean-Antoine Watteau, Francois Boucher, Jean-Honore Fragonard, Vigee-lebrun, Maurice-Quentin de Latour, Joshua Reynolds and Thomas Gainsborough. Although women's dresses of Rococo-style were influenced by many factors during their transformation, the upper classes, famous painters and writers played a leading role in their development. In addition, France saloon culture also contributed to the spread of these dresses. The materials, texture and patterns were also influenced by Oriental culture thus they displayed the Oriental flavor. With their delicacy, magnificence, elegance, sexiness and decorative beauty, the dresses of Rococo-style will not die out, for they are always the sources of fashion designs. The consummate cutting style and modeling technique are the precedent of three dimensional designs and of influence to the style design, frame design and making of fashion in modern time.
