| Through reviewing French modern artist Marcel Duchamp's view of life and art as well as analyzing his artworks, this essay aims at discussing the aesthetic ideology and his impact as a herald of the artistic revolution beyond canvas. Besides, Though he has been accepted, written and settled as a genre in fine arts history by the western artist circle, or even presently people still take delights in talking about his artworks, Duchamp's most excellent idea, that is to surpass the artistic limitation and enter a freedom realm, is not fully understood yet.Duchamp became the herald of the artistic revolution beyond canvas as well as its relationship with other artistic schools, say Dadaism. Besides, the difference between Duchamp and Cézanne, the forerunner of the artistic revolution on canvas, has been taken into discussion. In modern artistic history, Cézanne is a great artist, but not as great as Duchamp, because Cézanne's revolution is still restricted to canvas. What Cézanne hammering away at is how to paint, and the art he initiated only brings the renewal of artistic language and modality, whereas Duchamp had completely got rid of the canvas, his ready—mades has radically overthrown traditional concepts. If Cézanne is deemed as a serious painter, Duchamp should be deemed as an engrained ideologist.
