Correlation Of Personality, Parenting Style, Life Event, Coping Style And Subjective Well-being In Senior Middle School Students

IntroductionSubjective well-being(SWB) refers to individuals's evaluations of their lives, and includes three components: life satisfaction—a cognitive evaluation of one's overall life, the presence of positive emotional experiences, and the absence of negative emotional experiences. This study investigated the correlation among the personalities, parenting styles, life events and coping-styles to subjective well-being of senior middle school students, finding out how these 4 contributing factors affecting the adolescents' subjective well-being.MethodsThe subjects are from rural area, Heishan County with 230 senior middle school students and urban area, Shenyang city with 210 senior middle school students. SWB, EMBU, EPQ, CSQ, ASLEC are administered with 189 and 212 valid inventories respectively.ResultsOverall level of SWB is beyond the intermediate level. No significant difference between rural and urban adolescents, and no significant difference between male and female were found. SWB level are closely correlated with personality traits. Psychosis and neurosis are negatively correlated with SWB level and extraversion trait is positively correlated with SWB level. Among the parenting styles, five factors, punishment, excessive interruption, excessive protection, denial are negatively correlated with SWB level. Among them, father's denial decreases SWB level. Mother's emotional warmness, understanding patterns are positively correlated with SWB level. On the other hand, mother's punishment, excessive interruption, denial are negatively correlated with SWB level. Mother's excessive love has no correlation with SWB level. In coping styles, solving problem, rationalization, help-seeking are positively correlated with SWB level, while regression, self-blame are negatively correlated with SWB level. However, fantacy is positively correlated with SWB level. With logistic regression, personality, parenting style, coping style and life event contributes significantly to SWB level.ConclusionsGender does not correlate with SWB level; personality, parenting style, coping style and life event affect the SWB level. Among these four, coping-style is the most important factor, followed by personality and life event. Parenting style is the least important one.
