Waiting for Godot, written by Samuel Beckett, reflects Beckett's art of dramatic production and arouses heated response from the audiences. The unity of the absurd content of thoughts and absurd form of art is highly fulfilled in this play. The structure departs from the traditional play, for it is almost plotless without climax and ending, and the traditional portrayal of the characters cannot be found. Through this brand-new dramatic format, Waiting for Godot presents the absurdity of the human existence, expressing the anguished process of human beings searching for a new meaning for their existence. As one of the representative works of the absurd drama, Waiting for Godot has been given various interpretations. This thesis interprets the meaning reflected in Waiting for Godot, and illustrates the positive and negative message conveyed in the play. The analyses cover the anti-play format and the human existence seen from the ideas of Sartre and Camus respectively. From the proposition that the human beings just look for the evidence and meaning of life through the painful waiting in the hopeless situation, the thesis discusses how an individual, faced with the dying belief and the absurd society, lives on level-headedly and toughly.
