The teaching of English composition writing (ECW) has had a 10ng history and has been influenced by a variety of linguistic theories, but the basic guiding principles and ways of structuring have remained almost constant. This research is intended to approach ECW in the perspective of tagmemics in the hope of taking advantages of the holistic nature and unconventional categorization of this approach and to raise the efficiency of English teaching as well as gaining a deeper understanding oftagrnemics as a linguistic theory. The basic rationale of this research is that tagmemics was originated through theorizing and categorizing from substantial practical experiences in missionary undertakings; it is believed to have high applicability and thus feasibility for the purpose of this research. Moreover, the founder of this theory claimed that the tagmemic theory is an all-purpose theory; so presumably, it can also be applied to the composition teaching. Thus, the major effort is directed to the explanation of tagmemics and applying this approach to English composition writing; the latter results in some positive findings which confirm its feasibility and effectiveness for the assigned purpose. It is found that the tagmemic approach is able to handle, at once, writing in its all aspects, including form, meaning, function, and above all thematic substance or subject matter which has not been systematically handled in conventional approaches.Based on such considerations, the main contents and organizations are expressed in the following sequence:In Chapterâ… , after introducing English writing in general, the author presents the thesis statement, the three major objectives and some reasons for this research as well as the rationale and methodological considerations of this research.Chapterâ…¡is devoted to defining some concepts and terms of composition writing, and the conventional approaches to this undertaking, including structural, discoursal, stylistic, rhetoric and procedural approaches; the inadequacy of the existing models and necessity of new approaches are accordingly pointed out.Chapterâ…¢mainly discusses tagmemics as a linguistic theory, Covering its origin, basic conceptions and components; in addition, its applications are introduced and the possibility of its application to composition writing is examined in terms of concepts and principles. In Chapterâ…£, effort is made to apply tagmemie approach to composition writing in detail, first with a contrastive analysis of the conventional approaches, followed by an expounding on the cognitive and psychological bases of tagmemics for its application to composition writing. Then the nine-cell framework is explained and tested on two levels: application to thematic analysis and to interpret two conventional modes. This chapter is concluded with a construction of a new mode with holistic nature and coverage of dynamic components.Chapter V begins with conclusion of the major findings of this research and evaluation of them, and ends with a discussion of the implications and limitations of this research.
