Studying the marriage system and custom in the Classic of Songs is the major way forus to know the original style of the Zhou people's marriage life, and it helps us realize thecultural feature and significance at that just time caused by it. From the folklore's point ofview, combined with social history, philology and cultural humanics etc, this essayconcretely analyses the marriage configuration and marriage custom reflected on theClassic of Songs, and also analyses the reason and significance of the different marriagesystems and custom's existence according to the Zhou dynasty's historical condition,Zhou nation's features of cultural mentality and the differences among other nations.In the first chapter, it briefly introduced the evolvement process of the human marriagemodality started from primitive society and the importance of marriage itself. Referring tothe close period's historical literature, it summarizes the main marriage modalities andcustom literally recorded in the Classic of Songs period. In the second chapter, mainlywith the material in the Classic of Songs and related historical information, it concretelyanalyses the marriage system and custom in the Classic of Songs from both civilian andnoble sides. Based on the aspects of age background and terrain difference and so on, itdiscusses the causes and the historical significance of the major and minor marriagesystem and custom. In the third chapter, it opens out the cultural significance of themarriage system and custom in the Classic of Songs from the foundation of traditionalculture and embodiment of vital philosophy.The marriage system and custom in the Classic of Songs contains the original heritagefrom last dynasty and also the influence of administrative domestication and itsdiversification shows it just matches the age features and the need of the socialmanufacture. There is great and flexible culture connotation in it.
