The Application Of Chinese-English Machine Translation To The Abstract Translation Of Chinese Science Essays

Studies on Machine Translation has developed rapidly and been put into practicality since 1980s. China is the fourth one in the globe to take up this research, following America, Soviet Union, Britain, and already made achievements in commercializing Chinese-English and English-Chinese machine translation systems. Nevertheless, difficulties in analyzing complex and ambiguous sentences still exist and no effective methods have been found so far. Machine translation can't avoid manual intervention.Along with the development of modern linguistic theories, machine translation is more and more involved in the studies of both phenomenon and essence of natural language. This paper proceeds from the multi-engine perspective, analyzing respectively in details the merits and demerits of the three basic machine translation methods and depicts at length the working principles and procedures of multi-engine machine translation which can synthesize various advantages of other methods and realize the promotion of translation quality.Directed by the modern linguistic theories of Phrase Structure Grammar and Lexical Function Grammar, this paper applies multi-engine machine translation method to the abstract translation of Chinese academic papers. Language features of the Chinese abstracts are analyzed and some notes in transferring are given. The successful application aims at verifying that multi-engine machine translation method is indeed much more practical than any other single method in promoting the readability of the output translated version.
