Criticism In Authority Society

In Chinese new period of literary arena, Liu Zhenyun, is certainly one of the most noticeable writers. He set up the bright individuality, has formed the unique style in his works. In particular the subject"the authority"and the description about human nature are a model which is imitated by people who are keen on literature in the later period. He refused the main trend, and his works were based on the point of view from common people. This brought me a association of several selective trials that were very popular now. I think if you are accepted by millions of people and obtain their trust, you will be a great artist, such as Mr. Liu. He was entrusted with great missions to criticize the social and the historical problems. It's necessary to catch three key words If you want to seek the essence in his works, they are the"officialdom", the"power"and the"human nature".The officialdom novels are the beginning of his overall works, so they are read first in this thesis. This kind of novels provoked those heartless officials, just like a shape dagger. Liu expressed extreme abhorrence to the politics and believed that it is a piece of luxury for most common people, a toy for the rest minority persons. He created several gloomy characters and described their decadent process. These characters lost their nature for survival because of heavy pressure from the material field and the spirit field. In order to gain power and benefit ,they also lost their original passion and great ideals, finally,become slavers of power. Although they had struggled at first, they faced two ways to choose at last. One is to be winners who caught the power, the other is to subordinate themselves to the winners. Thus , no matter what results, their struggles were only in form, the nature had been lost actually.Herbert Marcuse, an American philosopher, has admonished us not to be One-Demension man in the science and technique society. In current cultural atmosphere, a lot of people may recognize the technique's and the culture's ability currently. But we recognized that the"power"ideology gave rise to negative functions at the same time. By reading Mr. Liu's new reality novels ,we recognize that we may be the next person ,who will lose his sense ability, struggle for the power and adopt crook in order to obtain the power .Then, we can go on with studying the"power"ideology in the following line of novels about hometown. His hometown supplied a plat for him to create more novels. By acquainting himself with his hometown, he started his spirit travel. The hometown stimulated his inspiration. History is another important aspect in his writing. In his novels, he exposed the truth which is opposite to the traditional history structure by using vulgar words to describe the activities of those unimportant persons. The history ideology was based on assumed theory, that is, history is only a kind of expressions or a version of story, not an actual event. He told the truth with his own ideas. The novels about history still remained the critical features.The"power"ran through his novels. He explained the"power"to a broad concept whose network had infiltrated from political field in to our daily life."Chicken feathers"was appraised to the most important novel. It showed the extension of power from society into families. Lin and his wife, main characters in the novel, had their own lofty aspirations and high ideals when they were in the college. However, the remaining determination had disappeared gradually because of the poor life. They were replaced with conventional views which worried about individual gains and loss. The subject of this novel told us a kind of spirit power that determined some ways of their life. Lin is just an unimportant person without higher society position and more power. The overall troubles in his life come from the limitation of nature and the increasing desires. Thus ,Liu Zhenyun combined power with human nature in his novels.At the end of this thesis, we studied the intellectual's ability and perplexity about reality further. Liu Zhenyun turned the responsibility and perplexity into his writing. It made him different from other intellectuals. As a explorer, he discovered misery in the life, just like great writer—Luxun. Certainly , he had limitation in his novels. From"Chicken feathers"to"Reviewed 1943"to"noodles and flowers of hometown",he has value to expect. His imagination in literature and charming expressions in these novels won the great reputation.
