The Research Of "Novel Criticism Through Poems" Before The Ming Dynasty

Novel criticism through poetry is a literary phenomenon involving criticism of ancient novels in the form of poetry.It is a form of criticism of ancient novels that has received little attention before.It is also a theme that has received lesser attention in ancient poetry.The fact that it is not much investigated by researchers in both fields makes the research of "novel criticism through poetry" worth our attention.From the perspective of novel literature,novel criticism in ancient poetry is of great significance for enriching and supplementing the theory of ancient novels.In terms of poetry,this kind of poetry helps researchers to objectively examine the temperament of the literati who pursue both elegance and popularity in literature.The research of this topic will also help widen the corresponding perspective of the research on the criticism of ancient novels.The introduction of this thesis defines the concept of "novel criticism through poetry",provides the reasoning behind the selection of objects to be studied,sorts out the current state of research on this topic in academia,and explains the line of reasoning in this thesis.The body of this thesis is divided into three chapters.The first chapter studies the reason that the phenomenon of "novel criticism through poetry" emerges before the Ming Dynasty.I study the topic from the dual perspectives of poetic criticism and novel criticism,and analyze the reason that novel criticism was parasitic on poetry which is the mainstream form of art at that time.I also study the external causes of this phenomenon by connecting "poetic criticism through poetry" with "dramatic criticism through poetry".Finally,I analyze the internal causes of this phenomenon from two perspectives: the unique role of poets as novel critics and the phenomenon of boosting the status of novels through criticizing them in poetry.The second chapter discusses the connotation of novel criticism manifested in "novel criticism through poetry" before the Ming Dynasty.Firstly,I study several definitions of novels in poetry before the Ming Dynasty,and then discussed the functionality of novels reflected in poetry.Through the analysis of the different focuses of novels on "realism" and "idealism" manifested in poetry,I explore the principles held by ancient novelists in their creation of novels,in order to reveal the inherent aesthetic with unique characteristics in the ancient novels.On top of that,Ialso analyze the ancients' understanding of the creation,propagation and reception of novels manifested in poetry.The third chapter discusses the uniqueness of the form of "novel criticism through poetry".Through the comparison with other forms of novel criticism such as prefaces,postscripts,comments and notes,I demonstrate the expressiveness of,the capacity of and the intensity in the emotions expressed in "novel criticism through poetry".In summary,the study of "novel criticism through poetry" does not only enrich the theory of ancient novels in terms of contents,but also widens the perspectives of the research in the criticism of ancient novels in terms of forms.It is of great value for us to understand the concept of novels before the Ming Dynasty and appreciate the charisma of the criticism through poetry.Therefore,it is important for us to pay due attention to this phenomenon.
