| As the representative of the younger generation of The Theatre of the Absurd, Harold Pinter not only inherits the tradition of the absurd drama, but also develops it into his own style. He has achieved the status of a major force in the contemporary theatre. And his unique"Pinterseque style"even has become an academic subject. The purpose of this paper is to study the Pinterseque style in Pinter's early play The Birthday Party. In this play, Pinter describes the situation of human beings'existence by his unique"comedy of menace". Menace is prevalent in people's life and may intrude at any moment. People's life subverts logic and becomes absurd. Language is not trusted by people in communication and can not mean what people want to mean. In such an absurd world, human beings are lonely and helpless and will finally lose in it. |
