"Mulriple Lines" In Narrative

In 1998, J.Hillis Miller issued a piece of work about narrative reading narrative.This work was considered as a sum-up in theory of narrative. At the same time,this work was also a piece of classical work in deconstruction narrative. In 2002, reading narrative was translated into chinese and introduced into our country. From then on, the deconstruction narrative theory of Miller was acquainted with chinese scholars. At the same time, domestic scholars was arguing about some questions in the deconstruction narrative theory of Miller. These argues proved that Miller's narrative theory as a boomtheory is made a lot attention in group of domestic narrative theory. And also ,these argues was deeping the comprehension in the theroy of Hillis Miller. In this article, through the research with some of the questions in the theory of Miller, the author try to elucidate reading narrative as what it is. In the meantime, in the reading process, the writer also involved currently viewpoint about Miller's deconstruction narrative theory. To this kind of different viewpoint and issue, the writer pointed out the misderstanding, in the meantime give his own explanation.Hope through these researches can remanage the deconstruction narrative theory of Miller, be cognizant of the substantial of Miller's theory,open our eyes in this boomtheory of narrative. And promoted the development of narrative theory.In the point of Miller, It pierces through a main line in the western narrative theories. This line is the imago of"line". He figured that narrative theory always considering narrative as a kind of"line",or maybe the use of the "line". Through this kind of"line"theory, traditional narrative theory complete to construct itself. The starting point of this kind of theory could trace back to Aristotle's Poetics . In poetics, Aristotle divided narrative into three part"head","tail"and"body".Afterwards, a series of western narrative theory consider these 3 parts as"customary rules"in narrative.And these 3 parts are basic aspects which constitutes an orbicular narrative. Miller deconstruct these 3 parts, and point out that the existence of"head","tail"and"body"is unsteady,even their existence is vain. Though the deconstruction of these 3 parts,Miller faltered the foundation of western narrative theory. Then on the basic of this deconstruction miller point that narriative can not be interpreted scientificly and accurately. It means analyse narrative is impossible. In this way Miller named his narrative theory as"anti-narriative theory".In the view of Miller, traditional narrative theory described narrative as a imago of"line",this description itself is not right. Because the writing has the dual characteristic of"time"and"space".The article which we write,those letters actually is according to the alignment of space and one by one in order appear on the book. But those stories express by writing is not. Narrative have the characteristic of"time".If we describe narrative as a imago of"line",we undoubtedly use a kind of space thing partition narrative which have the characteristic of"time".Later on, Miller form 3 parts:"the tail of line","the head of line","the body of line",to deconstruct the imago of"line"which bring forward by Aristotle.On"the tail of the line",Miller point that,because we can't make sure the integrity of a story, so, we can't make sure"the tail of the line".In Poetics, Aristotle define"tail"as"untie a knot",which means untie the knot that coming from the process of narrative. Miller made Oedipus for example, he thought that in this drama, the"tail of the line"is superposed with the beginning of the drama. Through this Miller pull down the definition of"tail"in narrative made by Aristotle. Miller think that, the coda of a story can't be made sure, because a novel can have a continuous article at any time, a story could be continued forever. had this kind of continue characteristic, the coda of story couldn't be existent.On"the head of the line",Miller think that confirme a beginning of a novel is arbitrary. According to Aristotle, the beginning of a story is"There is not another story happen before the beginning, and the beginning can be the causation of another story". In Miller's opinion, ervery story has a causation happen before. So we can not find an affairs forever, it is the beginning of other stories. Because of we can't find out thus a beginning, when we relate a story, the beginnings that we make sure are all arbitrary. So the beginning of story is actually not existent.On"the body of the line", Miller tinke that"the body of line"is not like what Aristotle say , which is a coherent, unify and logical lines. In the view of Miller, the central part of story is in fact miscellaneous and disorderly. And is two or three lines full of nonlogical things.The mulriple formal of narrative cause the emergence of mulriple lines in narrative. In narrative,the use of"mini-dialog"in single word and the use of speech cause the mulriple centers in narrative. At the same time, these also cause the"mulriple lines"in narrative. Depend on this, Miller point out the disappearance of center in narrrative. It means, there is not any center in narrative. In narrative, there are full of factors which we could not understand.In the view of Miller, the irony in narrative cause the disappeatance of narrative center. And this kind of irony exist erveywhere in narrative. The irony become an omnipresent uncertain factor. The uncertain factor exist erveywhere in narrative,so that we can't understand what the meaning of the narrative. The disappeatance of narrative center cause the elucidation of narrative is impossible. And then the whole narrative theory is deconstructed. After analysis the local scholar's comment on Miller,the author point out that Miller's theory about we can't elucidate narrative is not so correct.Because Miller over-emphasizing the uncertain factors and nonlogical things in narrative.Miller neglect the invariablenes factors in narrative. It is exactly the invariablenes factors that make us understand previously work. The root of Miller's theory is based on linguistics theory. The relationship between Signifier and signified is random. So the meaning of signifier is not by rule and line. In this point, the writer thinks that Miller in fact over-emphasizes the randomicity of signifier but neglect the opposite stability of signifier. The meaning of sign is also stable to some extent. So the comprehension and elucidation for narrative is still feasible.Miller's deconstruction narrative theory has the tendency of scepticism and opposition on elucidation, but deconstruction narrative theory still promote the development of narrative theory. The deconstruction narrative theory make us view traditional narrative theory from another point. Deconstruction narrative theory is based on the traditional narrative theory, at the same time ,it change the structure narrative theory.
