On The Academic Achievement Of Mr. Yang

Yang Zhouhan (1915-1989) is one of the precursors and founders on China's comparative literature. This thesis try to review his academic research and summary his achievement and describe the produces with the developing process of China's comparative literature, pointing out the close relation between the foreign literature and the comparative literature.By studying Mr. Yang's works, and referencing other scholar's opinion on Mr. Yang, we made more reasonable evaluation on Mr. Yang's academic realm, academic thought, academic achievement and the academic status.ⅠMr. Yang's translation theories and practice. Mr. Yang has been concentrate on the most basal work of foreign literature research——the translation of foreign literature works and theories. Mr. Yang have the mature theory of translation , he think that the standard of translation is different basing on different persons and different epoch, translation is not " reappearance "but "recreation", the peer to peer translation does not exist, the translator must be responsible. These principles of translation is still work. Mr. Yang is good at English, Latin, understands French, Sweden and Russian, and has published many excellent translation works of foreign literature and theories.ⅡThe historical research of literature. Mr. Yang said that he studied foreign language firstly, then he was interested in foreign literature, he began to study the history of literature.《The history of European literature》,which was edited by Mr. Yang, is the first historical works about European literature. It was used by many China's college as a text. About the English literature, Mr. Yang took the 17 century's England literature as a break and put it in the big historical background, pointed out the special meanings of 17 century's England literature in the thought history and the literary history and then he wrote the book《17 century's England literature (1985)》.ⅢThe research about Shakespeare. Mr. Yang is a generally accepted expert of Shakespeare. Mr. Yang's research of Shakespeare pay attention to using foreign research of Shakespeare for reference, pay attention to the language research and comparison research.《The collected comment materials on Shakespeare》,which is edited by Yang, is the most complete and systemic comment materials about Shakespeare up to now. On top of that, Mr. Yang published a great deal of Shakespeare's disquisition. His attitude and method of Shakespeare's study is the huge wealth for China's research of Shakespeare. Mr. Yang's contribution on the Shakespeare's study can't be obliterated.ⅣThe theories and practice of literature criticism. Mr. Yang's literature research and literary criticism is concomitant. He has translated a great deal of western theories works, he is also familiar with Chinese ancient literature's theory , he is good at using theories to evaluate literature works, and less pure theories of push to play. Mr. Yang's literature criticism did not try to form a system, but belong to a microcosmic analysis to writers or works. However, in some essays of《Carve Jade》, we can see Mr. Yang's more reasonable and valuable views of literary criticism at that time.ⅤComparative literature research. Along with the comparative literature introduced in China, Mr. Yang began to study comparative literature in his late years. In the aspects of across the West-Chinese culture of comparative literature study, he did not contented with the Study on Influence of France and the Parallel Study mode of United States, he think that the comparative literature is not only need to cross over the countries and language boundaries, but need to surmount the boundary of subjects, investigated literature under the cultural background. Moreover, Mr. Yang emphasized comparative literature research must have the nation's standpoint again and again, that means have "a soul of Chinese".Mr. Yang promoted Chinese comparative literature's development with its academic activity, witness comparative literature's come into being and mature, his academic productions is an indispensable part of the study of China's comparative literature. As the harbinger of Chinese comparative literature, he witnesses the development of all the process of comparative literature in China, as a founder of Chinese comparative literature, his academic works embodiment his academic thought and his comparative literature research still have very deep reality meaning today.This paper summarized Mr. Yang's academic achievement about the translation achievement, the research of Shakespeare, 17 century's England literature research(and the research of European literary history), literature criticism theories and practice, comparative literature research. Actually, Mr. Yang's academic research domain is very wide, in addition to researching 16 and 17 century's England literature, he also study 18 century's England novel, 20 century's modernistic literature, T.S.Eliot's poem and literature criticism for instance. Besides, he study the literature of United States, before the liberation of china, Mr. Yang has emitted a thesis about Wystan Hugh Auden:《Auden——the urchin of poem altar》.Therefore, simple partition of several research realm can't completely cover Mr. Yang's academic achievement, and each research realm is not entirely different but mutual cross, this paper divided several part to study Mr. Yang's achievement and its apocalypse just for the sake of research's convenience.
