Under today's atmosphere of the economic Globalization, the world culture exchange is growing day by day. The national culture has been received more and more attention. Folk pattern representation is an important characteristic of a national survival and the development, and also is their energetic existence. The traditional folk pattern representation is the reflection of the unity on the subjectivity and the objectivity as well as the inevitability and the contingency in the nationality development. At the same time, mural painting is one of the most glorious drawing forms which has a wide range of these and rich designs. Most of murals are usually mixed with traditional folk pattern representation. But the use of national culture and the folk pattern representation in mural has been impacted violently by the foreign culture while the industrialization and the tourist industry have made a great advancement. All of those take me to the use of folk pattern representation in mural painting.The author have made a deeply research both on the national art and the folk pattern by the-spot investigation of Mogao Grotto in Dunhuang, Xi'an Museum, Beijing Museum, Jinzhou Museum and many ancient and up-to-date murals, and have read up many reference. Using the examples of the ancient and modern mural , the author probed into and summed up the significance of this problem in many aspects such as the characteristics of the folk pattern, the principle of painting, the basic elements of painting, the handling of the folk pattern in different periods in and abroad. It has developed a feasible idea of the folk pattern used in the mural. It is propitious to solving the problem of the popular art using in various artistic form. This is of great importance to reinforce the inheriting of the national art and the folk map. Chinese muralists and artists are taking the historical mission in hand, and they have social responsibility which cannot be shifted off to carry forward our national culture.
