From Chang' An To Dunhuang

About development of Chinese painting, It had created one splendid term in ancient Tang dynasty. Now, lots of artistic achievements of ancestors are high mountains standing before us yet.Though mural painting of tomb and mural painting of grotto of Tang dynasty which belong to different artistic system but have same cultural background. They all got to their artistic top accompanying with prosperity of economy and culture. Mural painting of tomb (such as Zhanghai prince's tomb,Yide prince's tomb,Yongtai princess's tomb) and mural painting of grotto (such as Mogao cave ) exhibit their beauty of color,beauty of line,beauty of idea and form. Lots of their artistic ways are not only succeeded but also used by modern art, so it is necessary to study them.Fine—color painting of Tang dynasty which could be preserved are less and more are copied, but mural painting of tomb and mural painting of grotto of Tang dynasty which are originals and lots of paintings are better except less are destroyed. It is rare to the world for their number and scale. They provide plenty of materials for our studying. I study mural painting of tomb and mural painting of grotto of Tang dynasty by comparison, basing on watching carefully and using modern ways and principles. In my opinion, although they are different style but they all reflected rising national spirit and magnanimous courage together. But for their difference of use and origin, so it resulted lots of difference between them, such as difference of molding image,managing image,using line and using color and so on. It has important value to our study for regularity and spirit of Chinese art. We could find out ancient color painting which was prosperous in Tang dynasty, and which could supply strong reference and limitless spring for our creating new artistic style.Time has gone for thousands of years, new and old world replace continually like flower's growth never intermitting, but national spirit and form of Chinese art affects our present practice every hour and moment. Mural painting of tomb and mural painting of grotto show us two splendid rainbows from different way. Today we should abandon some biases for traditional art, to face up to east and west,tradition and modernization,ink painting and color painting squarely, to take care of traditional art and modern art with right academic viewpoint. Let academic flowers prosper below the environment of"pulling distance to west art"and"finding out national tradition". I only hope that we could attain something from studying to traditional art by comparison, to know it once more and create it once again.
