Alai's novel Everything Being There had the honor of getting the fifth session of Mao Dun literature prize, caused huge stir in Chinese literary arena. It received widespread high praise on artistic conception, narrative way, stylistic form and so on, which has aroused high interest of domestic and foreign commentaries. The commentaries which concernes about it are extremely many. The criticism methods and the angles present diversified, for example the aspect of writing technique, main thought, creative source, and cultural contents. So the novel displays its containment and openness, but few people analyses the novel from folk culture angle, so the analysis in this thesis starts from the angle of folk culture which the author recommends, based on the author's interviewed and the Tibetan's regional culture, and binding with Bakhtin's "carnivalesque poetics theory", for carring on artistic aesthetic and cultural criticism and trying to provide one kind of new view and method for latter research.The main part in the thesis contains three parts: carnivalesque character features, narrative carnivalesque and carnival square. Introduction generalizes this thesis, including the present study situation, the omission in previous criticism and study angles and methods of the thesis. Chapter One primarily investigates the folk prototype of the idiot figure and polyphony meaning which "idiot" functions as genre mask. For contrasting, it analyzes the chieftain's image;Chapter Two firstly discusses the source and core feeling of carnivalesque, then the carnival narration plot from the angle of folk culture, finally allegorized interpretes the coronation and abdication rite in the carnival;Chapter Three firstly contrastively analyzes the formal function of square in front of TuSi's fortress and boundary market, then the carnival life in the border maket, after that the function of folk humorous culture. Conclusion summarizes the whole thesis, sufficiently affirms that the folk culture is the root which makes ethnicl literature the tree flourish, the powerful vitality which makes Alai's novel successful.
