Joseph Conrad (1857-1924) is one of the most distinguished writers writing in English. He is the pioneer of Western Modernist Literature. His works were a bridge for the literary realism of the nineteenth century and Modernist Literature of the twentieth century. Conrad affected a large number of writers of the twentieth century, and he has also become a research hotspot of the Western academia. The domestic study on Conrad mainly concentrates on the characteristics of his fiction narrative, symbolic significance, impressionism, colonialism and the concept of male patriarchy, etc., while Analysis of characters are mostly focus on the narrator and the main characters. The narrator and the main characters become the only concern. This phenomenon has led to such problems that the "central figures" occupy an official awareness or the dominant position of traditional culture, and constituting the focus of public attention at the same time, they have been given the greatest right by the author to speak. They are the focus target of the novel narrative, to a certain extent they are also the core of the traditional value system. However, the connotation of Conrad's novels is not merely restricted to those characters. Their display is only the tip of the iceberg. This article started from the analysis of "Carnival" characters'situation in Conrad's novels, followed by analysis of the "Carnival"characters'characteristics, type, origin, cultural significance, as well as their role in the narrative structure and plot development. Thus the traditional study of Conrad's characters was questioned.By studying "Carnival" people we can take a comprehensive review of Conrad's characters and events of the novel, explore the hidden meaning of the folk culture under the official words, study the dialogue of official culture and folk culture which created by Question and colliding with each other. By redefining the structure, characters, themes of Conrad's novels, we can show Conrad's unique style between the realism and modernism, reveal the dialogue, complexity, ambiguity, openness of Conrad's novels. And we can also experience Conrad's mood at the turn of the century , such as conflicts, loneliness, pessimism, despair, etc.The main paper Includes four parts. The first part, analyzes the features of "Carnival" characters in Conrad's novels. Clowns, liars, fools, such as characters of Conrad's novels, these people are defined as "Carnival" characters. They could be divided into three situations: simple "Carnival" characters; mixed "Carnival" characters; suddenly changed "Carnival" characters. Part II analyzes the origin of "Carnival" characters in Conrad's novels. "Carnival square" in Conrad's novel is mainly reflected as deck, cabin and primitive tribe away from the civilization. It is in these original, free, vulgar, indulgence, non-rational environment have had such "carnival" characters. Part III analyzes the humorous folk culture revealed by "Carnival" characters in Conrad's novels. Such as the "Carnival" humorous folk discourse in An Outpost Of Progress , and the ironically simulation in The Heart Of Darkness, etc. Part IV analyzes the narrative function of "Carnival" characters in Conrad's novels. Through the use of some roles, including clowns, liars, fools, Conrad can refute the official awareness conveyed by the narrator, make the "central figure" questioned in the confliction of a variety of voices, and even take them down the altar. Therefore, the limitation of a single narrative discourse is broken, and the novel turn into a pluralistic, noisy world which full of hybrid language and public voice.
