When study the histories of Chang'an city, for the scholars'researches have their stresses respectively, until now, only a few scholars have analyzed carefully and comprehensively on the commodity economy condition of the Chang'an city during the Western Han Dynasty. Chang'an as the capital, its commercial evolution is both typical and unique. This point is very valuable. Based on these reasons, also in order to make the research more scientific and rigorous, the author takes Chang'an city in the Western Han Dynasty as the object of study, analyzes its commodity economy situation.This article attempts to concentrate focus to each aspect of commodity economy of Chang'an city during the Western Han Dynasty. It is helpful to know and understand comprehensively the characteristics about the capital's commodity economy and its national status. This article provides a new angle of view on related research. During the concrete researching process, the author diligently realizes the integrated utilization about those correlative disciplines, such as history, economic and archaeology, in order to achieve the unification by applying economic theories to those studies on economic history and capital city history.The innovations of this article lie in:â‘ The site of the western market and the eastern market has special characteristics: Wei River which flows in north facilitates the transportation of materials; Due to the existence of Shanglin Parkland, the market's position is safety; Away from the palace, market transactions are more freedom. The relationship between the two markets is really close. They form the commercial states which the trade and the handicraft industry unified comprehensively.â‘¡In the Chang'an city, the professions are multitudinous, the materials consumable are bountiful, the "spiritual consumables" which are primarily the cultural entertainment activities have been increasing gradually.â‘¢The merchants from western regions passed "the Silk Road" to bring their specialties, also have brought large quantities of gold. It is helpful in understanding why the Western Han Dynasty has so much gold.â‘£This article does not rigidly adhere to the traditional viewpoint about "the polarization of the rich and the poor", points out directly: Because there live so many rich consumers in Chang'an city and peripheral mausoleum countries that its level of consumption is truly quite high. In brief, the commodity economy level, in Chang'an city, is higher than other areas during the same time and has its own characteristics, cannot completely represents the overall level.
