The USSR And Egypt Relations During The Period Of Brezhnev

During the period of Brezhnev ( 1964-1982), the USSR and Egypt relations has been divided into three phases: the comprehensive development phase, it covers 1964-1970, when Brezhnev took office, he consolidated the bilateral relations, this coincided with Nasser's strategy; the turning point phase, it covers 1970-1973, after Nasser's death in 1970, Saddat became the top leader of Egypt, the bilateral relations ,while still important, was somewhat diminished; the retrograde phase, after the October war, the strategic conflict between them aggravated , the honeymoon period for the two countries was over.In 1964, when Brezhnev took office, he inherited and followed Khrushchev's internal and external policies for some period. Under the banner of maintaining peace in the world, the USSR became a glabal power and contended with the USA all over the world. Moscow's economic and military aid to the Egypt rised abruptly during the Brezhnev era. And the prestige and political status of USSR in Egypt also reached its highest point.After the death of Nasser, Egypt entered into Saddat's era. The conflict piont in national interest accelerated the deterioration of bilateral relations. The October war bacme the watershed in their relations.During the post- October war period, although still maintained the naval facilities in Egypt, the USSR pay more attention to the cooperation with Syria. And Egypt began to improve the relations with the USA. Therefore, the relations between the USSR and Egypt came to a standstill.In all, during the course of Soviet-Egyptian relations , which evolved from development to cooperation, and then from dissension to break, national interest played the most important role.
