Study On Xue Fucheng

The traditional crafts design in China was bom from the commodities market. The skill wasinstructed through master to student, which is more gained through experience approach andtransfer, less principle and theory studies.In late Qing dynasty, the advocates of the westernization movement directly purchased militaryinstruments first, then "manufacturing equipments". They thought it is very critical to learntechnology of equipment manufacturing. It's a start point of technology transferring and technicaltraining of local talents. They focused on technical itself at that time.When opinion of early modernization party has been brought out and developed during 70's to90's of 19th century, the parties not only lead the trend of equipment manufacturing, but also wantto revive traditional crafts design. All these activities directed crafts design confronting reality.It's a prelude of Chinese modern thought in 70 years of late Qing dynasty.Xue Fucheng, a diplomat of late Qing dynasty, is selected as a case study of this paper, and heis also an example of Chinese intellectual person.Thinking of Xue changed from westernization to modernization. He is impressed by Lin Zexu,Wei Yuan etc.., and inherited from Zeng Guofan and Li Hongzhang when he joined in thewesternization movement, but he is more mature and thoughtful than his fellows.He has written many books, include "Dairy of diplomatic mission in U.K, France, italy andBelgium". The western social activities, many factories, museums and church were recorded in thisbook. His record and comments can help us understand the changing of Chinese traditional craftsdesign in late Qing dynasty.Final, the conclusion of this paper:Xue Fucheng, as an example of modern ideologist, showed the changing of Chinese traditionalcrafts design to modern design, which was driven by changing of social infrastructure. It's Industrialand Commercial Economy forming and equipment manufacturing to found Chinese modern craftsdesign.
