Joseph Conrad, an eminent writer in twentieth-century English literature, is noted for originality of artistic techniques. His use of narrative techniques in the novel Under Western Eyes is remarkable, and is worthy of deep research. This thesis forms an attempt to analyze the major narrative techniques employed in characterization in the novel through a narrator who has a seemingly different cultural background. The thesis consists of five chapters. Chapter I is a general introduction to the author, the novel Under Western Eyes, and some criticisms of the novel. Chapter II defines and clarifies the narrator in Under Western Eyes. Chapter III begins with the theory of focalization and then focuses upon internal focalization of Razumov and dual focalization as well as the narrating self and the experiencing self. Chapter IV discusses the work's thought/speech presentation, particularly free indirect speech and direct Speech, and their significance in characterization. Chapter V is a conclusion.
