This paper tends to find a new angle for fictionaltranslation criticism through a study on the English transIation of Chineseclassical fictio──Hong-loumeng based on the issue of narrative mood─one of three categories of narraology. Narratology is the subjectWhich focuses on such issues as the Structure, devices and rules of narrativeworks, mainly of fictions. Fiction is the most essentiaI constitution ofliterature as well as poetry and drama. Nevertheless, seldom have the criticsviewed fiction itself as a kind full of unique devices and structures whenthey come to literary translation. An analysis of fictions on the Problems ofnarrtology would undoubtedly strengthen their attention to these aspectsand thus be beneficial to the translators' works. Hong-loumeng, as aChinese classical fiction, has its own narrative characteristics. Thediscussion is developed within three main problems of narrative mood:focalization, narrative of words and narrative of events. A large number ofevidences has proved that the translator has the tendency of varying morethan preserving the narrative characteristics in the SL text, which resultsnot only in the personal knowledge of the translator about the narrativecharateristics of the SL text, but also the profound backgroundconvntions of the westem fiction cultUre and their style of narrative. Fromthe case analysis, we could conclude that naxrave study in a fictionaltranSlation would haProve the bo of the understanding as well as thetranslation.
