Language is a symbol system, closely related to human life. Gender language, as a social variant of language, with its characteristics and differences, has attracted increasing attention from a great many linguists at home and abroad. It is of great realistic significance to study gender differences in verbal communication, through which our sensitiveness and consciousness of it can be promoted and our everyday verbal communication can be improved. It is essential and necessary to study the manifestation and embodiment of gender differences in speech communication and explain the profound psychological, social, and cultural factors behind the complex language phenomenon in human communication. This thesis tries to make a descriptive and comparative analysis of the language differences between males and females, starting from the dynamic process of verbal communication, viewing mainly from the perspective of pragmatics, and tentatively explores its causes of formation. The results of the study, it is hoped, would help to obtain a better and more comprehensive understanding of the issue by adopting the linguistic-pragmatic perspective. The thesis falls into five chapters. The first chapter gives an outline of the situation of language and gender study in linguistic circles, especially in the western countries, and introduces the direction of my study. The second chapter is a detailed analysis of linguistic features of gender differences in speech on different levels of the language system including phonology, vocabulary and syntax. The third chapter further explores gender differences in speech in terms of conversational topics, Cooperative Principle, Politeness Principle and turn-taking within the pragmatic framework. The fourth chapter is a tentative analysis of the causes of gender differences in speech. The fifth chapter is the concluding part summarizing the thesis, in which our major findings, limitations and directions for future study are stated.
