Thomas Hardy was a great writer of late nineteen century and early twenty century in Britain .He is famous for his long novels and his poetry is also considered as holding its own unique style,so his long novels and poems were paid close attention for a long time.During his late creating period ,Hardy also had created more than forty short novels .And at that time ,his creation had come into a mature period. His short novels should never be neglected although each of them is not wonderful .Love and marriage were their theme and tragedy was their endings. People could find Hardy's thinking on life and destiny and attention to the destiny of mankind.Coincidence and accident were beautiful scenery in Hardy's short novels and the characters fell into tragedy gradually because of them .The characters longed for happiness and they also made great efforts for it .But they could never escape the teasing of destiny.During late nineteen century ,the trend of non-rationalism rose gradually, Hardy ,who was learned and good at thinking ,was affected by it inevitably .Hardy's philosophical thought was complicated :he was influenced by Ancient-Greek tragedies and Shakespeare's tragedies ;the theory of evolution of Darwin's affected him greatly ; he also accepted Schopenhauer and Hartmann's thoughts partly. In this thesis ,Hardy's destiny philosophy will be analyzed ,based by Hardy's more than twenty short novels and cut in from coincidence and accident.
