Thomas Hardy described many women in his "character and environment." He focused on women and formed a unique view of women. He had a great relationship with Hardy's own living environment and women around him.His experience made the female image in his works deeply influenced by ancient Greek culture and Christian thought, and was full of strong fatalism.Hardy's women are mainly divided into two types. One is the awakening resistance. These female characters are essentially different from traditional Victorian women. They are full of enthusiasm, distinctive personality, with their own ideal judgment, and resist the patriarchal society. To pursue the ideal life of freedom and happiness. The other is the woman he hates.Hardy's description of many women is closely related to the background at that time.He witnessed the disintegration of the rural economic structure.Capitalism destroyed the traditional Wessex town. The beautiful pastoral life was replaced by the great machine of capitalism. He was unable to protect the pure land of Wessex in his heart. He was concerned about the situation of women in the face of industrial civilization. Many women are at a loss. They are deeply sympathetic to the living environment of women.By describing the tragic fate of these women, they expose the sins of the bourgeoisie and the opposition between capitalism and people, reflecting the social and cultural significance of many different women. The paper is divided into five parts:The introduction includes the background and significance of the topic, the review of the research at home and abroad, the research ideas and the research methods. This paper collates the research results on Hardy from different angles, and on the basis of this, determines the thesis' s topic-the study of the female images in Hardy's character and environmental novels.Chapter one deals with Hardy's life and female view. The concept of life and female nature is the basis for Hardy's creation of a series of female images in "character and environmental novels." His childhood environment, contact with ideas, and the influence of women around him have formed his unique concept of female nature. All these have an important role in shaping his image of a series of women. The second chapter discusses the types and character of female images in "character and environmental novels".It is mainly divided into two categories: the awakening of the new female image, the traditional image and the image of sinking. The new female and the Victorian female have an essential difference. They learn cultural knowledge, challenge the patriarchal society, resist society, and resist fate. With a clear self-consciousness and independent personality spirit, the pursuit of freedom and equality of the concept of marriage and love. The traditional and the fallen are the opposite of the new woman,Chapter three discusses the motivation of Hardy's shaping series of women. The reason why so many women with distinct personalities were described is that they were inseparable from the environment and social background at that time, social change, the development of capitalism, the traditional patriarchal system replaced by industrial civilization, the disintegration of the rural economic structure, and the invasion of capitalism.Hardy felt the dilemma of women's survival. The subjective aspect is the interaction between nature and women.Hardy was deeply influenced by feminine ecologism and believed that women and nature have a close and inseparable connection. The fourth chapter discusses the tragic beauty and social significance of the series of female images. The women in Hardy's works have a strong tragic beauty.Hardy, through a series of female images, profoundly exposed the sins of the Victorian bourgeoisie, truly reflected the situation of the working masses, and demonstrated the opposing relationship between capitalist development and human beings, and the social and cultural significance of the series of women.
