A Study Of Feminist Translation Theory And Its Application

Feminist Translation Theory first arisen since the late 1970s is the outcome brought by the conjunction of feminist wave and the newly development in translation studies. Its new visual angle and explicit political standpoint have greatly promoted the "culture turn" in translation academia, making an indelible contribution to translation studies, especially exploring for it a new territory of gender view. It conducts investigations into language-transference in the context of post-modernism and deconstructionism, arousing further thoughts and understanding from a gender angle to the complexity of translation, as well as awareness of unreasonable points of structuralism, thus subverting some deep-rooted views in traditional theories. However, due to its theoretical radicalism and extreme measures, it meets with many a criticism and faulting within and outside feminists, leaving much room to develop.In resent years, this new translation theory has begun to draw attention of translation academia in our country, reflecting on some articles of introduction in academic periodicals, yet, thorough discussions are still in rarity. This dissertation aims to carry out a relatively overall study on the theory and practice of this theory, to draw its essence and to recover its practicing measures through analyzing the cases of feminist translations, meanwhile conducting some comparative text-studying, thus to conclude a further recognition of the theory.In chapter one, the introduction covers its background, theoretical origins and main points and foothold. Chapter two abstracts its subversion on the traditional theories, reflecting in three angles: translator's identity, new views of faithfulness, and political attribution of translation. Chapter three discusses in detail feminist translation practices, through text studies, especially the feminist intervention in biblical translation, analyzes the specific measures and practicing strategies of the theory, and the novel style of feminist translations. Chapter four is a comparative study from gender perspective, in which the first section focuses on the comparison of two English versions by different gender angles, reflecting distinctive flavors; and the second section is in view of the particular social context of China. The comparative studies excavate the unconscious representations of feminist sense in Chinese translations. Chapter five arrives at a critic comment and conclusion, affirming the profound significance of feminist translation theory that makes great contributions to translation studies, while asserting that its theoretical attitudes and specific political inclination determine its future position as a marginal theory.
