The present thesis is a pragmatic analysis of the Chinese/English codeswitching in mass media, which manages to find out the types, functions and reasons of Chinese/English codeswitching in specific context by analyzing the data collected from Chinese mass media.Language, as a tool for human communication, is closely related to the genesis and the development of human society and also changes instantly along with the latter. Accompanied by the booming of the different speech communities, codeswitching as a phenomenon of language mix-using appears in our daily life frequently.Since the 1970s, codeswitching has been taken into the sight of linguists. Researches on codeswitching have been cultivated from different aspects. The main approaches can be categorized as follows: the sociolinguistic approach, grammatical approach, psycholinguistic approach, conversational approach and pragmatic approach. Compared with the other approaches, the pragmatic approach is more comprehensive to cover the linguistic, social, cultural and psychological elements of codeswitching. In this thesis, with the Jef Verschueren's Adaptation Theory as a theoretical basis, the author utilizes Yu Guodong's adaptation model to analyze the Chinese/English codeswitching which appeared in Chinese mass media.Through the research, the author holds that the codeswitching of Chinese and English in mass media cohere with the general principles of codeswitching which was presented by Yu Guodong. Chinese/English codeswitching in mass media is realized to adaptation of the linguistic reality, social conventions and psychological motivation. And the author also found that the types, functions and aims of Chinese /English codeswitching in mass media have their particularities. With the difference of the daily communication, codeswitching in mass media is not only focused on the people with bilingual competence but also is managed to attract the attention of all the people whatever they have certain bilingual competence or not. For this special aim of mass media, Chinese/English codeswitching has its exclusive types, functions and motivations. Finally, the influences of codeswitching in mass media on the information participants and language itself differ from it is in daily life.
